Rooftop Farming – Moving ahead towards urban sustainability

Plants have the ability to reduce the overall heat absorption of the building which then reduces energy consumption. If one doesn’t have adequate space for a vegetable garden, containers can be considered for growing these crops. The practice of cultivating food on the rooftop of building is becoming prominent these days especially in urban context.

Roof farming is usually done using green roof, hydroponics, aeroponics systems or container garden. Thermocol boxes and cocopeat is also a good option for growing vegetables on rooftop.

Vegetables like tomato, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, beans, lettuce, carrots, radish, most vine crops such as squash and cucumbers etc. can be easily grown in it. Depending on the crops you choose, the size of the container will vary. Most plant requires containers that allow at least 6-8 inch depths for adequate rooting.
